PINE/STRAWBERRY COMMUNITY PROFILE
Located at the geographic “heart” of Arizona and a pleasant 2 hour drive from the metropolitan Phoenix area. Pine and Strawberry are renowned for their beauty and recreational opportunities. Pine’s post office was founded in 1884. Pine is an elevation of 5,448 feet and is named for the surrounding beauty of the Ponderosa Pines. Strawberry is an elevation of 6,047 feet, and was named for the wild strawberries growing in the area. Although some snow falls in the winter, it usually melts quickly. The area enjoys all 4 seasons, none are severe.

POPULATION
There are some 5,000 + people in the area during the summer months. Since we are a mountain community and have many recreational activities our population does vary and is considerably less during the week.
SCENIC ATTRACTIONS
Nestled in the gently rolling foothills of the majestic Mogollon Rim – a 7,000 foot, 200 mile long escarpment – Pine/Strawberry is minutes away from several Rim Lakes and countless trout streams. Popular outdoor activities include hiking, fishing, camping, cross-country skiing and hunting. One of the only pure air ozone belts in the world, Pine/Strawberry sits on the edge of the world’s largest stand of Ponderosa Pine Trees. The beautiful pine-clad country around Pine and Strawberry offer many recreational facilities. Forest Service campgrounds in the 7,000-foot Mogollon Rim area are abundant. Blue Ridge Reservoir, Bear Canyon Lake, Knoll Lake and others are in the area for fisherman. Elk, deer, turkey, antelope, bear and mountain lion hunting is available thru application and permit. Many great photography opportunities are everywhere you look. Scenic drives such as: Control Road, a scenic drive under the Rim, the Mogollon Rim Road, part of the historical General Crook Military Road along the edge of the Rim, are numerous and include a natural wonder, The Tonto Natural Bridge, the largest travertine bridge in the world, now a state Park. Hikers, horseback riders and backpackers enjoy scenic Pine Trail head located at the southern edge of Pine.
Local attractions include the Oldest Schoolhouse in Arizona and Pine/Strawberry Historical Museum. Pine has a very fine library, Isabelle Hunt Memorial Library, for readers of all ages. During the year Pine and Strawberry host many family oriented events such a the Arts and Crafts Shows, Strawberry fest, quilt show, pancake breakfast, classic car shows and community center concerts.
COMMUNICATIONS
Our daily papers are the Arizona Republic (Phoenix) and USA Today. The local Payson papers are the Payson Roundup, Mogollon Advisor and the Gazette. KMOG-AM and KRIM-FM are radio stations coming from Payson. All Phoenix FM stations are received along with many AM stations. Cable TV and Satellite offer all the Phoenix channels along with many extras and pay channels.
EDUCATION
Pine has a elementary school with grades K-8. Students go by bus from Pine to Payson for High School. Classes are available in Payson at Gila Community College.
MEDICAL
Locally we have the Pine/Strawberry Clinic. Our hospital, Payson Regional Medical Center has 44 licensed beds. For medical emergencies we have an excellent fire department and recently we have acquired 911. For search and rescue we have a very well trained Tonto Rim Search and Rescue Squad. Three nursing home facilities, physicians, osteopaths, orthodontists, dentists, optometrists, chiropractors, opticians and ophthalmologists and only 15 miles away.
FINANCE
Several banking institutions are available in Payson.
AIRPORT
Payson Municipal Airport has a lighted 5,500 x 75-foot runway and offers FBO, fueling and maintenance facilities.
LODGING AND DINING
Pine and Strawberry have several motels and cabins for rent with several motels in and around the Payson area. There is also a fine variety of restaurants either in Pine and Strawberry or only a short drive away. You may choose to eat anything from fast-food to fine dining.
GOVERNMENT
Pine and Strawberry are unincorporated. The communities are in Gila county and governed by the 3 member Gila Co. Board of Supervisors. The county seat is in Globe. There are branch offices of some Gila County offices in Payson.
A SHORT DISTANCE AWAY
Payson offers additional community facilities including indoor theater, golf course, four lighted tennis courts, an auditorium, swimming pool, two parks, a bowling alley, three health clubs and rodeo grounds.
